Make-up vs. Retouching for Your Professional Headshots

So, you’re going for your professional headshots and naturally, you want to look great.  Many questions must be flying through your head. What to bring?  What to wear?  What perfect pose to strike?  And of course, one of the most widely asked questions:  Should I wear make-up to my photo shoot? Well, the answer is, like most answers to timeless questions, that it depends. In this post, we’re going to look at a bit of the behind the scenes magic that goes on when editing your photos and address some reasons why you may or may not want to wear as much make-up to your shoot.

The Magic Retouch

It’s hard to ignore the influence of technology while living in the heart of Silicon Valley, and it sure hasn’t been lost on photographers in the Bay Area. Slava Blazer Photography uses this state-of-the-art technology to provide incredible retouching services that make eyes sparkle and smiles bright.  Cutting edge software like Photoshop is used for a number of touch-ups.  Here are a few of the most popular.

·     Removing blemishes and wrinkles

·     Teeth whitening

·     Lightening of shadows

·     Adding color, blush, and make-up effects

There’s not much it can’t do!  This high-tech treatment ensures that your professional headshots represent you in exactly the way you want.

What’s the Catch?

Retouching is an excellent way to get the results you want from your professional headshots, but there is a catch.  Professional retouching caters to your unique face, which is unlike any other.  Because of this, it has to be done carefully and methodically by the retoucher.  The process takes about thirty minutes per photo, and depending on your chosen package can cost you extra.  Most available packages include anywhere from 1-4 professionally retouched photos in the price, so if you’re not looking to purchase more than 1-4 shots, retouching would be an ideal choice.  If on the other hand, you need photos in a number of different outfits or for a variety of purposes, you might be better off wearing make-up to the shoot in order to save some cash!

Make-up for Photo Shoots

If you choose to go all-natural and wear make-up to the shoot, remember to do just that, and be natural!  Your make-up shouldn’t cover your face but accentuate its features.  If you’re a confident make-up artist, then make yourself up in a professional way (think business meeting, not prom).  Many people choose to hire an experienced make-up artist for their professional headshots.  This is a great way to get that perfect, natural look without having to spend hours second-guessing in front of the mirror.  There are a number of professional and trustworthy make-up artists to choose from in the Bay Area.

Getting professional headshots should be a relaxing and fun experience.  The last thing you want is to have to worry about your make-up!  Find an experienced make-up artist or consult your photographer about retouching to make your shoot run as smoothly as possible.  The good news is that either way, you’re going to look great!
